South Australian scientists are undertaking trials to see if seaweed can be farmers as part of the state’s AUD243 mln ($1=AUD1.09) aquaculture industry, local press reports said.

Trials are underway near Port Lincoln involving four native seaweeds and their potential to be farmed.

Agriculture, food and fisheries minister Leon Bignell sees seaweed developing into an AUD6 bln market globally and believes that these trials are an important step towards a new income stream for aquaculture operators.
